With nearly 50 days till the election, Mississippi is STRONG McCAIN!In the 4 presidential cycles, Mississippi has voted Republican for each race:
Bush- 60% to Kerry- 40%
Bush- 58% to Gore - 41%
Dole- 49% to Clinton- 44%
Bush- 50% to Clinton- 41%
Currently pollster.com has McCain ahead of Obama with a solid 10 point lead, 52.9% to 42.9%.
http://www.pollster.com/polls/ms/08-ms-pres-ge-mvo.php. Mississippi has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1980; in fact, Jimmy Carter (1976) is the only Democratic presidential nominee to have carried the Magnolia State since Adlai Stevenson did in 1956.
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/mississippi/election_2008_mississippi_presidential_election says that 69% of voters say it is most important to find new energy sources instead of trying to cut back. Another big Issue in mississippi is going to be the economy and healthcare. With the amount of poor whites and African Americans in MS, these two issues will be reasons to get them out to the polls. But as in Louisiana, a lot of the people in these demographics have no means of getting to the poll, and cannot afford to take time off from their job to go vote.
Besides the key issues, there are two senate races that are happening in MS that will take place on November 4th, Cochran (R) vs. Fleming (D) and Wicker (R) vs. Musgrove (D). The Cochran vs. Fleming race can be called for Cochran who is leading by more than 20 points in the polls, but the race to watch will bethe Wicker vs. Musgrove. Musgrove is trailing Wicker 42% to 49%, which shows that the state is leaning republican for this race. But will Musgrove be able to get more voters out on November 4th? Even if so, the republicans will be out in full force voting for McCain and Cochran that Wicker will also have a high voter turn out for November 4th. Most likely a much higher turnout than Musgrove.
Most people are not talking about the senate races in mississippi because they are more concerned with the ‘big race.’ Mississipians are looking most forward to the presidential debate coming to ole miss on september 26.

Senate Race in MS!
With two senate races going on in MS, there is only one that an be called a battle. In one race, the Republicans will take the cake, Cochran (R) 59% to Fleming (D) 32%, but in the other race it is not so safe : http://www.pollster.com/polls/ms/08-ms-sen-ge-wvm.php.
In this senate race it is a close call between Wicker's (R) 49.6% and Musgrove's (D) 42.4%. Will this race bring out more democrats, and black voters, to support Musgrove on Nov.4? Even if it does it most likely will not bring out enough democrats to affect John McCains heavy lead in MS of 53.3%.
